Free Services for Senior Citizens: Top 5 Programs in New Jersey

by Robert O'Keefe

Are you or someone you know a senior living in New Jersey? Navigating financial challenges can be overwhelming, but there are several programs designed to ease the burden for seniors. At ROK Realty, we've analyzed the top five programs every senior in New Jersey should be aware of to save money on property taxes, utilities, groceries, and prescription medications.

Here’s a breakdown of these valuable resources and how you can apply:

1. Senior Freeze Program (Property Tax Reimbursement)

This program freezes property taxes for eligible seniors at their current rate, reimbursing them for any increases. It's a fantastic way to worry less about rising property taxes over time.
Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be 65 years or older.

  • Must have lived in your primary New Jersey residence for a certain length of time.

How to Apply:
The state typically mails out applications to eligible seniors, but if you haven't received one, you can call the Senior Freeze hotline or download the application from the New Jersey Division of Taxation website. Applying online is the easiest option.

2. Anchor Program (Property Tax Relief for Homeowners and Renters)

This program offers rebates for both homeowners and renters.
Rebate Amounts:

  • Homeowners

earning up to $150,000: $1,500 rebate.

  • Homeowners

    earning between $150,000 and $250,000: $1,000 rebate.

  • Renters

earning up to $150,000: $450 rebate.

How to Apply:
You'll need your Anchor ID and PIN, which the state mails to you. If misplaced, you can retrieve these online or by contacting the New Jersey Division of Taxation. Applications are available on the Anchor online portal.

3. PAAD (Pharmaceutical Assistance for the Aged and Disabled)

Seniors often struggle with the high cost of prescriptions, but the PAAD program helps by capping drug costs at $5 for generic medications and $7 for brand names.
Eligibility Requirements:

  • 65 years or older OR receiving Social Security benefits.

  • Annual income below $42,142 if single, or $49,209 if married.

How to Apply:
Use NJ Save, a one-stop online application platform for senior benefits programs. For a paper application, call the designated hotline and request one via mail.

4. Lifeline Utility Assistance Program

This program provides an annual $225 credit directly applied to your utility accounts for gas and electricity.
Eligibility Requirements:

  • Automatic eligibility if enrolled in PAAD or Medicaid.

How to Apply:
If you're not enrolled in PAAD or Medicaid, you can still apply via the NJ Save online portal. Both programs can be applied for simultaneously through this platform.

5. SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)

Groceries are a significant expense, but SNAP helps reduce this burden for eligible seniors. The program’s assistance is income-based.
Eligibility Example:

  • For a single senior earning less than $2,266 monthly, monthly SNAP benefits may range between $150-$200, saving up to $2,400 annually.

How to Apply:
Applications can be completed online at NJ SNAP or through your local county’s social services office.
